Syphilis is a common STD (sexually transmitted disease) that occurs because of the attack of a bacterium called Treponema Pallidum. The reaction of these bacteria causes an ulcer at the spot of infection and the bacteria continue to move throughout the body. Severe damage can occur to different parts of the body with the spreading of infection.

This disease is known to pass through four phases namely, primary, secondary, latent (dormant) and tertiary (later stage). The first two stages last for about a year or two and if not treated may lead to severe damage to body. Other people also can readily catch his disease when it is the first two stages. When it reaches its last stage it ceases to be contagious but the damage to the crucial body parts like heart, brain, eyes etc. has already been done. In extreme case it can even lead to death.

In the old times Syphilis was potent enough to cause serious epidemics. It was a dreaded disease and was even linked to some kind of magical/supernatural causes.  With the advancement in medical science, diagnosis and treatment of this disease has become relatively easy. The problem lies in the fact that its symptoms are not severe in many of the cases and therefore people tend to delay its treatment. But they forget the fact that the presence of this disease can increase the risk of HIV infection in the body as well.

The bacteria causing this disease come under the ‘delicate category’ and therefore are spread through the sexual route the most. They can spread through other means like mucous membrane and cuts/wounds in the skin also. In spite of being weak these bacteria are a great danger to the fetus in case the mother is infected by syphilis. The child may develop serious kinds of mental and physical complications even when in the womb.

At the current level of medical advancement, sufficient medicines are available for its treatment. Penicillin is the most common one and is highly effective also, especially when taken via an injection. But there are certain patients who are allergic to penicillin and therefore doctors have to administer other antibiotics to them. Good news is that in case of most of the patients that are injected with penicillin, this disease ceases to be contagious only after the passage of 24 hours.

There are of course some people in which the infection is not destroyed even after giving the required dose of penciling. In their case repeated treatment and blood tests become a necessity up to the point where the infectious bacteria are destroyed completely. This disease is fully curable even in its last stage but the damage that it does to the organs is irreparable. Therefore, its early detection and treatment becomes a supreme necessity. Controlled sexual behavior is the best precaution against this disease.
